A: WHAT SHOULD MY MTD MODEL NUMBER AND SERIAL NUMBER LOOK LIKE?

Current (1997 and later) MTD model numbers and serial numbers are generally 11 characters in length. A character could be a number, dash or letter. If '0' represented all numbers and/or dashes and 'X' represented all letters, the model and serial numbers would appear as follows:

Model number example: 00XX000X000
NOTE: When using the chart below, "a prefix" consists of the first two digits of a model number.

Serial number example: 0X000X00000

A:WHERE IS THE LABEL ON MY EQUIPMENT THAT SHOWS MY MTD MODEL NUMBER AND SERIAL NUMBER, AND WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Identification labels are located in areas unlikely to need replacement, even after years of use.

For most of our outdoor power equipment, these labels are approximately 2" x 3". They list the MTD Products name, address and customer service phone number listed on the bottom.

For handheld equipment, the label is usually white and approximately 1" x 1/2" in size. Labels for handheld products are normally on an aluminum portion of the engine, somewhat set into the unit to protect the label from wear.(A bar code will also be on this tag.)

On MTD riding mowers you can typically find the label showing the lawn mower model and lawn mower serial  number underneath the seat.

On walk-behind MTD lawn mowers, you can find the label showing the lawn mower model number and lawn mower serial number on the deck.  On the rear-discharge units, you can find it on the rear door.

On MTD garden tillers, the model and serial number label is generally on the tine housing.

The MTD model number and serial number for two-stage MTD snow blowers are located on the bottom of the main gear housing, which is often called the belly pan.  On single stage snow blowers, the labels are next to the key and primer.

For other products, such as MTD trimmers, edgers,  log splitters and chipper shredders, the labels can be found on the frame or main housing.
